Can I Drop Collision on a Paid-Off Car in Kentucky?

Yes — Kentucky law does not require collision coverage on any vehicle, and once your car is paid off, no lender is forcing you to carry it. Whether you SHOULD drop collision depends on the car’s value versus the annual premium. A common rule: if collision premium is more than 10% of the car’s actual cash value, dropping it usually makes financial sense.

What Kentucky Actually Requires

Kentucky’s minimum required auto coverage is:

  • Bodily injury liability: 25/50
  • Property damage liability: 25
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): $10,000 per person (unless rejected in writing)

undefined

Collision, comprehensive, uninsured motorist (in some limits), medical payments, and rental reimbursement are all OPTIONAL under Kentucky law. Lenders require collision and comp during a loan; the state does not.

The Financial Test for Dropping Collision

Blake’s rule of thumb: divide the annual collision premium by the vehicle’s actual cash value (ACV). If the answer is over 10%, dropping collision usually wins in the long run. Examples:

  • 2008 Camry worth $6,000; collision costs $400/year — 6.7% ratio, keep collision or drop depending on cash reserves
  • 2005 F-150 worth $4,000; collision costs $600/year — 15% ratio, drop it
  • 2015 Accord worth $12,000; collision costs $500/year — 4.2% ratio, keep collision

What You’d Lose by Dropping Collision

Collision pays for damage to YOUR car from a crash, regardless of fault. Without it:

  • If YOU’RE at fault: you pay for your own vehicle repair or replacement out of pocket
  • If someone ELSE is at fault: their liability pays your damage (assuming they carry enough insurance)
  • If an uninsured driver hits you: uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD, optional in Kentucky) fills the gap

What Blake Recommends Doing First

Before dropping collision, three moves:

  • Check the current market value of your car (KBB or NADA) so you know what you’re insuring
  • Get an annual quote breakdown from Boswell — see how much collision costs specifically
  • Increase your uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) limits — cheap way to fill part of the gap
  • Make sure you have enough savings to replace the car if you totaled it
