You do not need full coverage on an old truck in Kentucky unless you have a loan or lease — Kentucky only requires state minimum liability, and comprehensive/collision on a low-value truck often costs more than the truck is worth to insure.

What Kentucky actually requires
Kentucky law requires liability coverage only — 25/50/25 minimum limits. Comprehensive (theft, hail, glass) and collision (crash damage) are optional unless a lender requires them. If you own the truck outright, you can legally drop comp and collision.
The rule of thumb we use
If annual comp + collision premium is more than 10% of the truck’s actual cash value, dropping them usually makes sense. On a $3,000 farm truck, paying $600/year for full coverage rarely pays off.
When to keep full coverage even on an old truck
Keep full coverage if the truck is your only vehicle (a total loss leaves you without transportation), if it’s a work truck you can’t afford to replace out of pocket, or if you have a wood stove, hail exposure, or theft risk that makes comprehensive worthwhile.
What we recommend in Western Kentucky
For rural KY farm trucks worth under $5,000, we usually drop collision but keep comprehensive for hail and deer strikes. On trucks under $2,500, liability-only often makes the most sense. We’ll price both ways and let you choose.
