Does Kentucky Farm Bureau Write Outside of Kentucky?

Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance is a Kentucky-only insurance carrier — it does NOT write policies for property or vehicles located outside Kentucky. If you move out of state, buy a vacation home in another state, or purchase a boat registered in another state, Kentucky Farm Bureau typically cannot cover those risks. You’ll need to place that coverage with a different carrier — often creating a coordination gap between your Kentucky home and out-of-state property.

Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Footprint

Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance (KFB) is one of Kentucky’s largest personal-lines insurers, but they operate as a Kentucky-only carrier. Their policies apply to:

  • Kentucky-titled vehicles
  • Kentucky-based homes and farms
  • Kentucky-registered boats and recreational vehicles (for the physical damage side)
  • Kentucky business locations

What Happens When You Move or Buy Out of State

Common Kentucky Farm Bureau customer scenarios:

  • You move to Tennessee — KFB cannot cover you at the new address; you need a new carrier
  • You buy a lake house in Missouri — KFB cannot cover it; separate carrier needed
  • You buy a Florida condo — KFB cannot cover it; separate carrier needed
  • You keep a boat at Center Hill Lake in Tennessee — coverage gets complicated

The Coordination Problem

When your Kentucky home is with KFB and your out-of-state property is with a different carrier, several issues surface:

  • Umbrella coverage — a KFB umbrella doesn’t extend cleanly over non-KFB primary policies
  • Bundle discounts split across carriers
  • Claims coordination on losses that span multiple properties
  • Renewal management becomes fragmented

The Independent Agent Alternative

Boswell Insurance Agency writes across Erie, Progressive, GEICO, and two additional carriers — all of which operate multi-state. For clients with Kentucky primary + out-of-state secondary properties, we can often place both with the same carrier for:

  • A single umbrella covering all properties and vehicles
  • Multi-property bundle discounts
  • One agent handling all renewals and claims
  • Consistent limits and deductibles

Should You Switch From Kentucky Farm Bureau?

Not automatically. KFB writes competitive policies for Kentucky-only clients and has strong agent presence in every county. Where it makes sense to look at alternatives:

  • You own or will soon own property outside Kentucky
  • You need commercial + personal lines coordination that KFB doesn’t handle cleanly
  • You want to compare rates against Erie, Progressive, and GEICO
  • You value having one agent for everything
