What exactly does Rate Lock do?
Rate Lock holds your auto insurance premium flat between policy actions. Your premium won’t increase at annual renewal regardless of industry-wide rate filings. It will only change if you (a) add or remove a driver, (b) add or remove a vehicle, or (c) change your address.
Am I eligible?
Any Kentucky Erie auto policyholder can elect Rate Lock at the start of a new policy or at any renewal. There’s no minimum tenure or credit score requirement in Kentucky.
Does Rate Lock cost extra?
There’s no extra fee for the Rate Lock feature itself. However, the starting premium for a Rate-Locked policy may be slightly higher than the same policy without Rate Lock — you’re trading some starting cost for premium stability. For most Kentucky households, the trade favors Rate Lock over 3-5 years of ownership.
Does Rate Lock cover claims?
Rate Lock is separate from claim-related rate action. Erie’s standard Kentucky rating still applies to your claim history — Rate Lock doesn’t shield you from a claim raising your rate. What Rate Lock does is prevent rate increases from carrier-wide rate filings, industry loss trends, or general renewal re-tiering.
What voids Rate Lock?
- Adding or removing a driver from the policy
- Adding or removing a vehicle
- Changing your primary garaging address (moving)
- Non-renewal of the policy (very rare)
Does Rate Lock cover teens?
Yes — but adding a teen driver is a “policy action” that resets the Rate Lock at the current rate. In practice, this is fine: your teen’s rate is what it is at the time you add them. Rate Lock then holds that new premium flat going forward.
Can I add Rate Lock to an existing Erie policy?
Yes, at your next renewal. Call your Erie agent (that’s us for Murray, KY area) 30-45 days before renewal and request Rate Lock be added.
What states offer Rate Lock?
Rate Lock is not available in every Erie state. Kentucky is included. Availability changes over time — always verify with your agent.
Is Rate Lock worth switching to Erie for?
If you’re tired of annual renewal rate increases, yes — Rate Lock is a real product feature no captive carrier (State Farm, KFB, Allstate) offers. Whether Erie is the right total-value pick for your specific household depends on your driver profile, home bundling situation, and credit tier. An independent agent can quote Erie plus alternatives in one call.
