TL;DR
This comparison is unusual because we actually write both Erie and Progressive at Boswell — Progressive is one of our 5 independent-agent carriers, so we don’t have a bias toward one. Progressive’s strength is its competitive pricing for high-risk drivers, non-standard auto (SR-22, prior cancellations, multiple incidents), and its strong commercial trucking and snowmobile/RV markets. Erie’s strength is preferred-risk households, Rate Lock, homeowners on rural and lake properties, and the multi-policy bundle. For our typical Kentucky household client with a clean record and a home, Erie usually wins. For higher-risk drivers, commercial trucking, or specialty markets, Progressive often wins.
How they’re structurally different
Progressive is the third-largest auto insurer in the U.S. Sells direct (Progressive.com, 1-800-PROGRESSIVE) AND through independent agents (like us). Founded 1937. Headquartered in Mayfield Village, OH. Publicly traded (NYSE: PGR). Aggressive on non-standard auto. Strong commercial book.
Erie Insurance is sold only through independent agents. Founded 1925. Reciprocal exchange owned by policyholders. Stronger on preferred-risk households than non-standard.
We write both through our office. We’ll quote both for every client and recommend whichever wins. The fact that you can quote both with one phone call and one agent is the whole reason independent agencies exist.
Auto insurance: head-to-head
Progressive auto strengths:
- Non-standard auto (SR-22, prior lapse in coverage, multiple at-fault accidents). Erie often won’t write these. Progressive does.
- Name Your Price tool lets you set a target premium and see what coverage you get for that money.
- Snapshot telematics — discount for safe driving habits, plug-in device or app.
- Aggressive pricing on multi-vehicle households with mixed driving records.
- Commercial auto and commercial trucking (Progressive is one of the largest commercial truck insurers in the U.S.).
Erie auto strengths:
- Rate Lock — premium doesn’t increase at renewal absent vehicle, driver, or address change.
- Better pricing on clean-record households at renewal (year 2-5).
- ERIE Auto Plus add-on bundles accident forgiveness + transportation + locksmith.
- Deeper multi-policy discount when bundled with Erie home.
Which wins for which clients:
- Clean record + standard auto + you also need home insurance → Erie usually wins.
- SR-22, prior lapse, multiple incidents → Progressive often wins (Erie may decline).
- Commercial trucker, owner-operator → Progressive usually wins.
- Multi-driver household with one bad record dragging the rest → Run both quotes — split outcomes.
Homeowners insurance: head-to-head
This one is less close. Erie is generally the stronger homeowners carrier for Kentucky households. Progressive doesn’t directly underwrite homeowners — they partner with American Strategic, ASI, and others, so the “Progressive homeowners” experience is actually a third-party policy serviced through Progressive. That works fine but the structural arrangement means less direct policy customization.
Erie writes homeowners directly with deep underwriting flexibility on:
- Older Kentucky homes
- Rural properties with outbuildings
- Lake homes on Kentucky Lake / Lake Barkley
- Manufactured homes
Commercial insurance
Progressive wins on commercial auto and commercial trucking — they’re one of the largest in the country and their pricing is hard to beat for tractor-trailer operations.
Erie wins on Business Owners Policies (BOPs), general liability, commercial property, and workers comp — Erie’s ERIEsecure Business ranked #1 in J.D. Power 2025 small commercial customer satisfaction.
For most Murray-area small businesses (retail, restaurants, professional offices, contractors), Erie’s BOP is the right answer. For commercial trucking, owner-operators, or non-standard commercial fleets, we typically write Progressive.
When to consider Erie over Progressive (or vice versa)
We can quote both at the same time — that’s literally what we do for every household client. But practical guidance:
Lead with Erie if:
- Clean driving record (no incidents in 5 years).
- You also have a home to insure.
- You want Rate Lock predictability.
- You’d rather have one agent who handles auto + home + life under one company.
Lead with Progressive if:
- SR-22 required.
- Recent driving incidents or coverage lapse.
- You’re a commercial trucker.
- You want telematics-based pricing (Snapshot).
- Auto-only, no homeowners.
How a Boswell quote works
This is the easy case: we already represent both. Send us your current dec page and we’ll quote Erie AND Progressive AND our other carriers on the same coverages, side-by-side. Whichever wins your specific situation, we write. You don’t have to call two different agents.
