How to Add a Teen Driver to a Kentucky Auto Insurance Policy (Minimize the Rate Hit)

Adding a teen driver to a Kentucky auto policy typically adds $1,000 to $2,500 per year to your household premium. Follow these 4 steps to add the driver correctly and stack every discount available.

Written by Blake Boswell, licensed Kentucky property & casualty producer. Updated July 2026.

Step 1: Add the driver as soon as they get a permit

Kentucky requires drivers with a Learner’s Permit to be added to the policy as a listed driver. Some carriers don’t charge additional premium during permit stage (before full license) — Erie is one that typically doesn’t. Others charge from day one. Check with your agent.

Step 2: List the teen on the LEAST valuable vehicle

Most Kentucky carriers rate teens based on the “primary vehicle” assignment. Listing the teen as the primary driver of the oldest, lowest-value vehicle usually produces the lowest premium impact. Don’t assign them to the newest or most expensive vehicle unless they’re the actual primary driver of it.

Step 3: Ask about every discount

  • Good Student — B average or better. 5-15% off the teen’s portion.
  • Driver Training — accredited driver’s ed course. 5-10%.
  • Distant Student — teen attends school more than 100 miles from home and doesn’t drive the covered vehicle regularly. 15-30% off their portion.
  • Telematics / usage-based — Erie’s YourTurn, Progressive’s Snapshot, others. 5-20%.
  • Multi-policy bundle — parents bundling home and auto extends the discount to the teen’s portion too.

Step 4: Raise limits before adding the teen

Teen drivers statistically cause more at-fault wrecks. A single wreck at Kentucky’s minimum 25/50/25 limits blows through the entire policy in the first hospital week. Raising liability to 100/300/100 and adding a $1M umbrella BEFORE the teen starts driving costs maybe $300-$500 more per year — but protects your home equity and future income.

Where costs come from

  • Teen driver added to household: $1,000-$2,500/year rate increase
  • Umbrella policy added: $200-$400/year
  • Raise auto liability to 100/300/100: $100-$200/year
