Kentucky first responders — police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics — sometimes qualify for insurance discounts, but availability varies by carrier. Occupation-based first-responder discounts are less standardized than “hero discount” advertising suggests. Some carriers offer them, some don’t, and eligibility depends on your specific department, association memberships, and household risk profile. Here’s what genuinely exists in the market.
Written by Blake Boswell, licensed Kentucky property & casualty producer, Murray, KY. Updated July 2026. This page is informational — Boswell Insurance Agency does not guarantee occupation-specific first-responder discounts and does not currently maintain a dedicated program across our carrier lineup. Actual discounts available depend on carrier and household situation.
What kinds of first-responder discounts exist in the industry
- FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) member arrangements. Some carriers periodically offer FOP group discounts. Availability shifts.
- State Sheriff’s Association / State Police benefits. Occasional group insurance arrangements.
- Kentucky Firefighters Association. Primarily group life and disability, sometimes auto.
- Employer-sponsored programs. Some Kentucky departments and municipalities negotiate group arrangements with specific carriers.
- “Hero” or “responder” branded discounts. A few carriers advertise these — verify they actually apply to your specific situation before assuming.
The discounts every household — first responder or not — should stack
- Multi-policy bundle: 10-20% off home and auto
- Good driver: 10-20% for clean record
- Multi-vehicle: 10-25%
- Monitored alarm: 5-15% off home
- Higher deductibles: 10-20%
- Telematics: 5-20% based on driving behavior
Life and disability for first responders
Rating for term life and disability varies by role. Sworn law enforcement in high-risk assignments and structural firefighters sometimes see class-adjusted rating. Employer-provided line-of-duty life insurance and disability programs cover much of the gap. Always coordinate personal life insurance with your department’s provided benefits before adding new coverage.
What to actually do
Check with your department’s HR or benefits office for any negotiated insurance arrangements. Verify FOP or association member discounts through those organizations directly (not through carrier marketing). Then get an independent agent to shop your household across their carrier lineup with every discount that legitimately applies. We can quote across 5 carriers — Erie is our flagship — with every applicable discount stacked. We don’t currently offer a dedicated “first responders” program, so we won’t pretend to.
