Kentucky Motorcycle Insurance: Coverage, Cost, and Why 25/50/25 Isn’t Enough

Looking for motorcycle insurance in Kentucky? Motorcycle policies are underwritten differently than auto — different limits, different medical payments coverage, different discounts, and different specialty markets. Whether you ride a cruiser, sport bike, touring bike, trike, or dual-sport, the right policy costs less than most riders think and covers substantially more than the state minimum requires.

Kentucky motorcycle insurance minimums

Kentucky requires the same liability minimums for motorcycles as for cars: 25/50/25 (bodily injury $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, property damage $25,000 per accident). Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is NOT required on motorcycles — Kentucky specifically excludes motorcycles from mandatory PIP. That’s an important gap most riders don’t know about until they need it.

For most Kentucky motorcycle riders we recommend at least 100/300/100 liability, matching uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and elective medical payments coverage of $5,000–$25,000 — because if you’re hit, your health insurance may deny motorcycle-related claims or apply a large deductible.

What motorcycle insurance actually covers

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability — what you owe others if you cause a wreck
  • Comprehensive — theft, vandalism, fire, hail, animal impact
  • Collision — your bike’s damage in a wreck
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist — if you’re hit by someone with no or low coverage
  • Medical payments (optional but strongly recommended) — your medical bills regardless of fault
  • Accessories and custom parts coverage — chrome, aftermarket exhaust, custom paint, saddle bags, GPS. Standard coverage is $1,000–$2,000; you can schedule up to $30,000+ for heavily customized bikes.
  • Roadside assistance and towing — usually $10–$30 a year for meaningful coverage
  • Trip interruption — hotel and meals if your bike breaks down on a trip
  • Safety apparel coverage — helmets, jackets, boots damaged in a covered loss

Frequently asked questions

Do I need motorcycle insurance in Kentucky?

Yes. Kentucky requires 25/50/25 liability coverage on registered motorcycles. Riding without insurance in Kentucky is a Class B misdemeanor with fines and potential license suspension.

Does motorcycle insurance cover me if I don’t own the bike?

Only if you’re listed as a rider on the owner’s policy, or you have your own non-owner motorcycle liability policy. Borrowing a friend’s bike without being on their policy leaves you exposed personally.

What’s the cheapest motorcycle insurance in Kentucky?

Cheapest is a 25/50/25 liability-only policy on a small-displacement cruiser for a 35+ rider with a clean record, which can run $150–$250 per year. But liability-only leaves you exposed if your bike is stolen or totaled, and doesn’t help with your medical bills after a crash. Most riders should carry at least comprehensive and medical payments coverage.

Is Kentucky a helmet-required state?

Partial. Kentucky requires helmets for riders under 21 and riders with a motorcycle instruction permit or with less than one year of licensed motorcycle experience. Riders outside those categories may ride helmet-optional. Insurance rates aren’t affected by helmet status, but medical bills after a crash are.

Does my umbrella policy cover my motorcycle?

Only if the motorcycle is scheduled on the umbrella policy AND the underlying motorcycle policy meets the umbrella’s required minimum limits (usually 100/300/100). Scheduling a motorcycle on an umbrella typically costs an extra $25–$75 per year.
