An SR-22 in Kentucky is not insurance itself — it’s a filing your insurance carrier submits to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet certifying that you have the minimum required auto liability coverage. You need one if you’ve had a DUI, driving without insurance conviction, at-fault accident causing serious injury, or license suspension. Here’s how to get it, how much it costs, and how to get your license reinstated.

Who needs an SR-22 in Kentucky
- DUI or DWI conviction (typically 3 years)
- Driving without required insurance conviction (2-3 years)
- Reckless driving conviction
- At-fault serious injury or fatal accident
- Accumulation of moving violations beyond the point threshold
- License suspension for other reasons
How the SR-22 process works
- Get an auto insurance policy that meets Kentucky’s 25/50/25 minimum with a carrier that files SR-22s
- Request the SR-22 filing when binding — usually a $15-$25 filing fee
- Carrier files the SR-22 with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (electronically, usually same day)
- You take proof of SR-22 to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet along with any required fees
- License is reinstated after all requirements met
- Carrier maintains SR-22 for the required period (typically 3 years)
Cost of Kentucky SR-22 insurance (2026)
An SR-22 filing itself costs $15-$25. But the underlying insurance is dramatically more expensive because you’re now a non-standard risk. Typical Kentucky SR-22 policy costs:
| Situation | Typical Annual Premium |
|---|---|
| One DUI, otherwise clean | $1,800-$3,000 |
| Multiple violations + DUI | $2,500-$4,500 |
| DUI + at-fault injury accident | $3,000-$5,500 |
Which carriers write Kentucky SR-22 policies
Most standard carriers (Erie, State Farm, KFB) either don’t write SR-22 policies at all, or only continue existing customers. Non-standard carriers specialize in SR-22 business: Progressive, Direct Auto, Bristol West, Kemper, GAINSCO, and others. Boswell writes SR-22s through our non-standard markets — call and we’ll place it same-day.
How long does SR-22 last
Kentucky requires SR-22 filing for typically 3 years from the reinstatement date. During those 3 years, if your auto policy lapses even for a day, the carrier must notify Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which will re-suspend your license. Don’t let coverage lapse.
After the 3-year period ends
Once the required period ends, you can switch back to a standard carrier — Erie, State Farm, etc. — and drop the SR-22 filing. Rates typically drop 40-60% at the switch back to standard carrier, especially if you’ve maintained clean driving during the 3-year period.
Non-owner SR-22 in Kentucky
If you don’t own a vehicle but still need to reinstate your license, a non-owner SR-22 policy provides liability coverage when you drive borrowed vehicles. Typical cost: $600-$1,200/year.
