Bottom line for Kentucky EV road-trippers: Your Kentucky auto insurance follows your EV across state lines and covers you at Supercharger stops the same way it covers you at a gas station. But three EV-specific scenarios — battery damage during charging, a vehicle striking you while parked at a Supercharger stall, and rental coverage while your EV is out of service on a road trip — are worth thinking through before you leave Murray for Nashville, Louisville, Chicago, or Florida.

Kentucky Supercharger locations along major corridors
- I-24 corridor (Nashville–St. Louis): Paducah, Kentucky is the primary Kentucky Supercharger stop on I-24. Grand Rivers and Hopkinsville also have chargers.
- I-65 corridor (Louisville–Nashville): Bowling Green, Elizabethtown, Cave City, and Louisville have Supercharger locations.
- I-64 corridor (St. Louis–Louisville–Lexington–West Virginia): Louisville, Frankfort, and Lexington are the primary Kentucky stops.
- I-75 corridor (Cincinnati–Lexington–Knoxville): Lexington, Richmond, and Corbin have Supercharger locations.
- Non-Tesla EV access. Ford Lightning, Rivian, and other NACS-equipped or NACS-adapter-equipped EVs can now access all Kentucky Supercharger locations.
Coverage while charging
- Battery fire during Supercharging. Covered by your auto comprehensive coverage (not liability). If Tesla’s Supercharger equipment or the Supercharger operator is negligent, your carrier subrogates against them.
- Vandalism at a Supercharger stall. Covered by comprehensive.
- Another vehicle strikes your parked EV at the stall. The at-fault driver’s liability pays; if uninsured, your UM property damage responds.
- You unplug and drive off with the connector. Damage to the Supercharger equipment is your liability exposure. Damage to your vehicle is covered by collision after your deductible.
Rental coverage while traveling
If your EV is disabled far from home during a road trip and requires a Tesla or EV-certified service center appointment, your standard Kentucky auto policy’s rental reimbursement is often capped at a low daily amount ($30–$40/day) and 30 days total. For a road-trip EV, consider:
- Increasing rental reimbursement to $75/day and 60 days if your carrier offers the option.
- Confirming rental reimbursement pays for a comparable class vehicle if you request an EV rental.
- Roadside assistance limits — some Kentucky auto policies cap towing at 25 miles, which is short of the distance an EV may need to reach a service center.
Out-of-state coverage carries with the policy
Your Kentucky auto policy provides at least the minimum required coverage of any state you drive into (Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, or West Virginia). Kentucky’s no-fault Personal Injury Protection stays with you across state lines. UM/UIM limits carry with the policy. This means your Kentucky Tesla insured through Boswell Insurance is properly covered on a Supercharger road trip to Nashville, Louisville, Chicago, or Atlanta.
Kentucky border-commuter EV special note
If you commute across the Kentucky-Tennessee border to work — common in Fulton, Hickman, Trigg, and Todd counties — Tennessee’s tort system differs from Kentucky’s no-fault. Your Kentucky policy still covers you, but the interaction between Kentucky PIP and Tennessee’s fault-based system matters if you’re in an at-fault Tennessee accident. Talk with your Kentucky agent about whether higher UM/UIM limits are worth it.
