Bottom line for Kentucky owner-operators and small fleets: Kentucky trucking insurance requires Commercial Auto Liability (minimum $750,000 FMCSA for interstate; $1M is standard), Cargo, Physical Damage on the tractor and trailer, and Non-Trucking Liability (bobtail). Kentucky truckers hauling within-state have different filings than interstate.

Kentucky trucking coverage checklist
- Primary Commercial Auto Liability. FMCSA requires $750,000 minimum for general freight, $1M+ for household goods, and $5M for hazmat. Most Kentucky shippers require $1M.
- Motor Truck Cargo. Covers freight you’re hauling. Cargo values, cargo type exclusions (electronics, alcohol, tobacco), and per-shipment limits vary by policy.
- Physical Damage (tractor and trailer). Comprehensive and collision on the rig.
- Non-Trucking Liability (Bobtail). Covers you when you’re driving the tractor without a load and outside of dispatch — different from your primary liability.
- Trailer Interchange. If you pull other companies’ trailers, you need this.
- Workers Compensation / Occupational Accident. Kentucky requirements for employed drivers.
- General Liability. For yard/dock exposures.
Kentucky DOT and MC filings
Interstate trucking requires Form MCS-90 endorsements and FMCSA filings; we handle the paperwork. Intrastate Kentucky trucking has separate Kentucky filings.
