Filing an insurance claim on a Tesla in Kentucky is different from a standard gas-car claim in three material ways: repair timeline is longer, certified body shop options are limited, and battery inspection adds a step most claim processes don’t include. As a Kentucky Tesla owner and insurance agent, here’s what to actually expect.
Written by Blake Boswell, licensed Kentucky property & casualty producer, Tesla owner, Murray, KY. Updated July 2026.
Step 1: Immediate post-wreck actions
- If safe, move the vehicle out of traffic. Tesla dashcam records automatically — don’t reset it.
- Take photos of every angle, all involved vehicles, damage to your vehicle, license plates, road conditions.
- Get the other driver’s insurance info and driver’s license.
- Call police for any wreck with injury or property damage over $500 (Kentucky law).
- Note whether Autopilot or FSD was engaged. This matters for claim documentation.
Step 2: File the claim
Call your insurance carrier’s claim line. Or call your agent — that’s usually faster and gets you an advocate. Provide:
- Policy number
- VIN
- Vehicle model, trim, year, mileage
- Date and location of wreck
- Description of what happened
- Autopilot/FSD status if engaged
Step 3: Tesla-certified body shop assignment
Tesla-certified body shops in Kentucky are limited. Your carrier will suggest one — options in western Kentucky are typically Louisville or Nashville. Transport of the vehicle to the certified shop adds 1-3 days to the timeline. Some carriers cover transport; some don’t. Ask specifically.
Non-certified repair may void Tesla’s warranty on repaired components. For most Kentucky Tesla owners, insist on certified.
Step 4: Battery pack inspection
Any wreck involving impact to the underbody, sides at battery height, or serious collision triggers a battery pack inspection. This is often the deciding factor between “repair” and “total loss.” Battery replacement can exceed vehicle value.
Timeline: inspection typically takes 5-10 days from vehicle arrival at certified shop. Adjuster works with Tesla service on findings.
Step 5: Total loss vs. repair decision
If repair cost exceeds a certain percentage of vehicle value (typically 70-80% in Kentucky), the vehicle is totaled. On Teslas, this happens more often than on gas cars because:
- Body panel repairs cost more (aluminum)
- Sensor calibration is labor-intensive
- Battery damage can single-handedly exceed threshold
- Diminished value on a Tesla is significant even after repair
Total loss settlement — what you actually get
Total loss settlement is Actual Cash Value (ACV) at the time of loss unless you have specific coverage endorsements:
- ACV base: Market value depreciated. Tesla ACV has fallen faster than gas cars in 2024-2026 as new production has ramped up.
- New Vehicle Replacement endorsement: Some carriers replace a totaled vehicle with new for first 12-24 months of ownership. Ask specifically.
- Gap coverage: If you owe more than ACV, gap coverage pays the difference. Essential for financed Teslas.
- Diminished Value coverage: Partial payment even after successful repair. Uncommon; check policy.
Typical Kentucky Tesla claim timeline (2026)
- Days 1-3: File claim, get adjuster assigned, vehicle transported to certified shop
- Days 5-12: Battery and structural inspection
- Days 12-15: Adjuster scope of loss review
- Days 15-45: Parts ordered, repair scheduled (parts availability drives most of this)
- Days 45-90: Repair completed, calibration testing, delivery back
Rental car coverage during claim: your policy’s rental reimbursement pays daily up to policy limit for typically 30 days. Extended repair delays may require you to negotiate extension with the carrier.
If your Tesla is totaled — next steps
- Verify total loss settlement amount
- Sign over title to insurance carrier
- Remove personal items from vehicle
- Notify Tesla to remove vehicle from your account and transfer FSD if applicable (FSD may or may not transfer to new vehicle — check policy)
- Coordinate replacement vehicle
