Why Tesla insurance costs more in Kentucky than a comparable gas car
- Battery pack replacement: $12,000-$25,000 depending on model. Any structural battery damage often totals the vehicle.
- Tesla-certified body shops are limited in Kentucky. The nearest Tesla-certified collision center to Murray is in Nashville or Louisville — cars often need to be transported, adding to claim cost.
- OEM parts pricing. Tesla parts cost more than gas-car equivalents. Aluminum body panels, sensors, and glass all price higher.
- Autopilot/FSD sensor calibration. Even minor front-end damage requires re-calibration of cameras and sensors — labor-intensive.
- Higher initial vehicle values. Insured value is higher than most gas equivalents.
Tesla Insurance (Tesla’s own program) — not in Kentucky yet
Tesla launched their own insurance product but it’s not currently available in Kentucky. Kentucky Tesla owners buy from standard carriers. This may change — Tesla has expanded state-by-state — but as of 2026 it’s not a Kentucky option.
Home Supercharger / Wall Connector install coverage
If you install a Tesla Wall Connector at home (mine cost $475 for the unit plus about $1,200 for electrical), that installation adds to your home’s replacement cost. Notify your home insurance carrier of the addition. Most homeowners policies cover it under Coverage A (Dwelling) as a permanent fixture.
- Verify the 240V circuit and any panel upgrade are included in dwelling coverage
- Check for wind/hail exclusions specific to exterior-mounted chargers
- Consider scheduled personal property for the Wall Connector if it’s over $1,500 with installation
Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) insurance implications
Kentucky doesn’t have specific laws or rate differentials for FSD-equipped vehicles as of 2026, but carriers are watching claim patterns. Two things Tesla owners should know:
- The driver is still legally responsible. Kentucky treats you as the operator even when Autopilot or FSD is engaged. If you cause a wreck while on FSD, your policy responds — same as if you had been driving normally.
- Product liability against Tesla is a separate legal question. If FSD malfunctions and causes injury, whether Tesla bears any liability is a separate lawsuit. Your insurance still pays what it covers.

Superchargers themselves don’t create insurance obligations, but road-trip insurance (uninsured motorist, medical payments) matters for long-distance driving.
My honest recommendation for a Kentucky Tesla owner
- Full coverage with a preferred carrier — 100/300/100 minimum liability, comprehensive and collision with a $1,000 deductible
- Add an OEM Parts endorsement if the carrier offers one — this matters more on Teslas than gas cars
- Bundle with home insurance for the 10-20% discount
- Consider Erie Rate Lock if you plan to keep the Tesla long-term — flat premium is nice on a higher-cost policy
- Consider telematics/YourTurn — Teslas drive predictably, most Tesla drivers do well on usage-based programs
- Add a $1M umbrella policy — inexpensive protection on a household with a higher-value vehicle
